How to reach Somnath by train, road and air
Veraval station is about 7 km from the temple, Diu airport about 90 km, Rajkot about 190 km and Ahmedabad about 400 km. Here is how to plan each route, and the last stretch to Prabhas Patan.

Getting to Somnath at a glance
Somnath has no airport of its own and its nearest railhead is the neighbouring town of Veraval. Almost every journey therefore has two parts: a long leg by train, air or road into Saurashtra, and a short last leg to Prabhas Patan. The distances below are measured to Sagar Darshan Guest House on Somnath Mandir Road, about 400 m from the temple.
| From | Distance | Best way | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Veraval railway station | about 7 km | Auto rickshaw or taxi | The nearest railhead to Somnath. |
| Diu airport | about 90 km | Taxi by road | The nearest airport. |
| Rajkot | about 190 km | Road, or train to Veraval | Larger airport and a major rail junction. |
| Ahmedabad | about 400 km | Train to Veraval, or road | The most flights and trains in Gujarat. |
| Mumbai | Not by road for a short trip | Fly to Diu, Rajkot or Ahmedabad, or take a train | Plan the last leg by road or rail. |
We do not print fares on this page. Train, bus and air fares change with the season and the class of travel, and an out of date fare is worse than none. Check them on the official sites named below, and agree taxi and auto rickshaw fares before you set off.
By train: Veraval is the railhead
For most pilgrims the train is the easiest and most economical way to reach Somnath. The station to book is Veraval, about 7 km from the guest house. Indian Railways runs trains to Veraval from Ahmedabad and Rajkot, including overnight services, and travellers from further away usually connect through one of those two cities.
Book on the official IRCTC website or app, and check the current timetable for your date rather than relying on an old list of train numbers. In the months of Shravan and around Mahashivratri and Kartik Purnima, trains to Veraval fill early, so book as soon as your dates are fixed.
From Veraval station to the guest house
Auto rickshaws and taxis wait outside the station. Ask for Sagar Darshan Atithi Gruh on Somnath Mandir Road, near the temple, and agree the fare before you load your bags. The road passes close to Bhalka Tirth, about 3 km from the guest house, which many pilgrims visit on the way in or on the way out.
Many trains arrive early in the morning, before the 11:00 AM check-in. Mention your arrival time in your enquiry; the reception is open 24x7. An early arrival is also a chance to walk straight to the temple for the 7:00 AM aarti.
By road from Ahmedabad and Rajkot
Ahmedabad is about 400 km from Somnath and Rajkot about 190 km. The usual road route from Ahmedabad runs through Rajkot and then Junagadh before reaching Veraval and Somnath. From Ahmedabad it is a full day's drive with stops; from Rajkot it is comfortably done in a morning or an afternoon.
Bus
The Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation, GSRTC, runs buses to Somnath and Veraval from towns across Gujarat, and private operators run overnight sleeper coaches from Ahmedabad and other cities. Book GSRTC buses on its official website. Private coaches usually stop in Veraval or on the Somnath road; check where yours terminates and take an auto rickshaw for the last stretch.
Taxi or your own car
A car with a driver gives you the most freedom, especially if you plan day trips to Gir, Diu or Junagadh while you are here. Parking is available at the guest house for guests arriving by car. Once you have parked you will not need the car for the temple, which is a five minute walk away.
By air: Diu, Rajkot or Ahmedabad
The nearest airport is Diu, about 90 km away. It has a limited number of flights, so check the current schedule before planning around it. From Diu the onward journey to Somnath is by taxi, along the coast.
Travellers who want more choice of flights usually fly to Rajkot, about 190 km away, or Ahmedabad, about 400 km away, and continue by road or by train to Veraval. From Ahmedabad, an overnight train to Veraval often makes more sense than a full day on the road.

From Mumbai
Mumbai is too far from Somnath to drive comfortably on a short trip. The practical choices are to fly to Diu, Rajkot or Ahmedabad and continue by road, or to travel by train. Check IRCTC for trains from Mumbai to Veraval on your dates; if there is no convenient direct service, travel to Ahmedabad or Rajkot and change there. Whichever you choose, build the last leg into your plan so that you reach Somnath in daylight if you can.
From Diu
If you are holidaying in Diu, Somnath is an easy road journey along the coast; Diu airport is about 90 km from the guest house. Many visitors combine the two, spending a night in Somnath for darshan before or after a few days by the sea in Diu. Our guide to day trips from Somnath covers Diu in more detail.
